Why not, indeed! I would love to be entered in your giveaway, and if by chance I win, I'd be happy with either color. Thank you for the opportunity, Jon!

I'm not very lucky with drawings.. but I will try my luck again.. I would love to have either of the two...
Congratulations, Diane and Prabhdeep.
Prabhdeep, looks like luck has come your way this time.
Please e-mail me your mailing addresses and I will send them to you as soon as possible.

Since both of you have not made a pick of your choice pack, I will keep it a secret and let you find out only when you receive it, ha ha ha ... How's that to keep the suspense going!

Now a Square

After working with triangles as in this post, I started on squares.

This is the square motif that resulting from several attempts. It is rather small even though I am working with size 20 thread, just about 1.75in or 4.5cm wide.

Joining up several of this square motif results in this little mat, still a work in progress.

This is a rather interesting exercise for me.  As you can see, the motif on its own has no outside picots that can be joined to.  I had to think ahead to the second motif while making the first one and think of where to join and how.  And this totally change the construction of the square compared to if it is on its own.  The resulting piece may need a little pressing when done, but I am satisfied with it at the moment.

Now, on the giveaway ...
As at the time of writing this, I will be making the draw of the winners later tonight.  That means there is still about six hours left for you to enter the drawing.  Good luck everyone.

A Giveaway, just because .......

well, why not!   These are what I am giving away.

Pack A - Milford Mercer purple varieg #20 - 1 ball, 4mm purple round beads - 30gm pack, thread holders in 3 sizes, and 3 thimbles (2 - leather and 1 metal)
Pack B - Milford Mercer green #20 - 1 ball, 4mm green round beads - 30gm pack, 4 charm/fob strap, and 3 thimbles (2 leather and 1 metal)
The threads and beads are some that I have left from the wedding project a few months back.

I read somewhere that a tatter (sorry dear Tatter, I can't remember who you are) used a piece of leather strip over her finger to stop the thread from cutting into it.  I came across the thimbles and thought it would be great for me, too.  But, I didn't realise that I have dainty fingers.  The thimbles are too big for me and they slide down to the second knuckle of my finger when I put it on, ha ha ha.  My loss will be someone else' gain.

The thread holder and the charm straps are accessories for your thread and to accessorise your tatting.

I will pick two winners in the draw, one for winner for each pack, from the comments left on this post.    You may choose which pack you like to win.  If the two winners picked both chose the same pack, then I will decide by the flip of a coin, who gets what.

The draw will be made on Tuesday September 20th.

My blog setting only accept comments from registered users, no anonymous comments.

Tatting Gems by another name .....

A number of tatting friends have expressed curiosity about the names that I have chosen for the snowflakes in the book Elegant Tatting Gems.  It was not easy to find a name for each one.  I thought about naming each after a tatting friend but I have so many to chose from and don't want to be seen favoring one over another, :(

In brief, I have chosen names related to precious stones or related to jewelry,  as well terms expressing love and affection, and of beautiful things.  Here I will try to give you the meanings of the names that I have chosen.  Some have direct meanings or translation to English.  For a few others, I cannot find the exact translation of the word, so I have provided its meaning.
  • Adiratna - this is one of the terms used for or to describe a beautiful person, especially a woman.
  • Adan - heaven or paradise.
  • Almas - unpolished diamond.
  • Baiduri - opal.
  • Cintamani - a form of lucky stone.
  • Galuh - another name for a princess, also used for diamond.
  • Mustika (also mestika) - 'love of my heart'.
  • Nilam - sapphire.
  • Kencana - gold.
  • Delima - ruby.
  • Lazuardi - jacinth.
  • Nilakandi - another name for sapphire.
  • Ratnasari - beautiful princess.
  • Sahmura - a general name for precious stones, used in old literature.
  • Yakut - Turkish term for ruby.
  • Ratnawilis (ratna wilis) - emerald that is bluish-green.
  • Firus - turquoise.
  • Zamrud - dark green emerald.
On other note, I wish to thank everyone for the birthday wishes on the occasion of my birthday on August 30th.  It was also the day that we celebrated Eidul-fitri, the day of festivities to mark the end of the fasting month.  It was certainly a very busy couple of days. I did not have time to come online much.  I am sorry if I was late in replying to some of the e-mails, too.
