More from MK and an unfinished doily

I was tatting Posy from Tatting with Visual Patterns and I must say that it is a good pattern to practice making joins at awkward angles.  I also found out that the way I usually make this join, the folded join, did not work with this pattern. When I need to make this type of join, I have the rest of the tatting in the cup of my hand and the picot I am joining to is right on top. But doing it this way resulted in my thread laying above the work, where as I need it to be beneath it. I had to change my method slightly to have the shuttle thread where I want.  And, despite this slight change, it turns out to be rather easy piece of tatting.

Next, I have below the Spinning Wheel Glass Mat from the same book, all done.

Lastly, a picture of a doily that I was working on a few weeks back.

This is Mat no. 34 from the DMC Book of Charted Tatting Designs by Kirstine & Inge Nikolajsen. This is only up to Round 3 of the doily out of seven rounds all together.  Could not proceed much further because I have run out of this particular thread.  I am still considering what to do next with this one.  I have a ball of yellow that is quite close to the yellow of this thread but it is size 40 where as the one I used here is size 30.

Still need to work on hiding those ends though,  .... not something that I like to do.  Wouldn't it be nice to be able to have someone just hiding ends ....... he he he.

  1. You can't go wrong with MK's patterns... in my humble opinion! Mat No. 34 looks very familiar. I guess I'll have to look it up.

    1. You are right Diane. I have never been disappointed tatting Mary Konior's patterns.

  2. Oh, another Spinning Wheel mat! This must be one of the most popular patterns from Mary Konior's book. Lace-lovin' Librarian Diane was just showing me her latest one a few days ago at our "Tollway Tatters" get-together. Fabulous colors!

Well, since you have run out of thread on the Mat no.34 it looks like you have 3 color choices to coordinate with the variegated thread. Yellow, white, or green - you could use a different color on different rounds, or progressively darker shades of similar solids. It would complicate matters to use a smaller size thread, though - more double stitches would need to be added to compensate. But, clever tatter that you are, I'm sure you'll figure out a solution with stunning results!

  4. Love your header Jon, that is a pretty doily. I like your Posy and your Spinning Wheel. both look very good.
As for the doily, I had pretty much the same thoughts as Marilee did as to what to do, but also thought that you could use a totally different but coordinating color for the rest of the rounds. just depends on the look you are going for.

can you get any more of that thread? even if the dye lots aren't the same, you can do a round or 2 in a solid then finish with a variegated that closely matches, for the final round.
