New Year Exchange - way so overdue

I finally sent out my gift for the New year Exchange in the Shuttle and Needles group in early March. We were supposed to make a drawstring bag and add in some stash in it for our partners. I have to apologise to Jullie , my exchange partner, for sending it out so late. It was supposed to be in January and look what month it is now, :-}

This is the bag that I received from Jullie. It is a mix of crochet bottom with a fabric top. If you follow the link to Jullie's blog that I gave above, you'll find that she is very good at crochet, especially amigurumi shapes.

Besides the bag, there are a few other stash items which include two balls of thread, and a tool for making fabric-wrapped buttons, as seen in the picture below.

And the reason for the delay ...

I totally made a mess of the first bag, which didn't turn into a bag at all, and started over. Jullie was very understanding about it. Then, other matters came into play that took most of my time. I had to think very fast and made something real quick. There was a lot of improvising and finally this is my bag to Jullie.

Some may recognise the design from here. Well, that was the improvising part. Yes, it was what was I hope to turn into a table mat. Instead of a flat piece, I joined the last row of motifs to the beginning and turn it into a tube, which is sewn to the fabric of the bag.

I have added a few other items together with the bag but in my haste I did not take any photos of them.

I hope Jullie likes what I have sent her.

Now... there is the matter of the birthday exchange to Aileen, which is also way overdue. Oh! dear........

  5. I really love this bag you made! The tatting on it makes it very striking. How did you sew it on? Good job on the quick thinking.

  7. Tattycat, Tatskool I love Jullie's bag for me. I started using it as soon as I received it and even before I finished my bag to her, :-}.

    Barbara, my DD chose the fabric for that. It was a toss up between this and scarlet. I like the way this one turned out.

    Thanks TattingChic, Valerie.

    Tattrldy, the bag folds back into itself to form a lining of sorts inside it. First, I hand stitched in the tatting, picking up the picots on the outside motifs. Then, I do the fold and sew the channel for the string at the top of the bag. The back of the stitching is hidden in between the two pieces of fabric, so I wasn't concerned with how the back of it looked like, ;-)

  9. hey hey! Thanks for visiting my blog.

    Beautiful project btw. What a neat idea :)

    In re: the whole 'dying skills' thing...I'm an embroiderer who has watched so much knowledge end up lost to time about obscure techniques mostly...and when I tried to get into tatting I found fewer people knew THAT than even embroidery. Needle/shuttle/hook arts are certainly thriving within our craft communities, but outside knowledge of them is almost gone. If I hand almost any of my friends a doily they'd never be able to tell me if it's tatted, bobbin lace, needle lace, or something else. Even if they'd like to learn one or another technique, they don't even recognize it and that it has to be done by hand...and most of them say they don't have the time to learn. It's much harder to do so now that it's hard to find a teacher/friend who can help, too.

    I did learn the first stitch on the plane. I'm currently making little tatted circles with picots. I'll get there :D I can tell that it'll be relaxing and easy to take with me when I'm on the go. I'm looking forward to learning. Thank goodness for books.

  11. Mine is still with me to Eileene. I really had to improvise (more once she receives it). All are here but I got into a bit of trouble with my HDTs which I had over-dyed and still the washing is not clear (after three days of washing). Took a break to let it dry and the colorways are worth it.
