Back to Basics

My first tatting attempts was doing edgings. That was so long ago when I was about 10 yo. And it was not even my own tatting. It was a friend's and she was showing me how to tat.

A few days back, I had this flash in my mind about doing edgings again, but with an added factor. I noticed that most patterns for straight edgings only give the instruction for making the straight side. Very seldom do I see patterns that includes making the corners.

That is what I decided to do, make edgings and tat the corners as well. I started by designing these two simple edgings ... very basic. The outer one uses shuttle-and-ball while the inner one need two shuttles.

The added bonus in the centre is a square motif made by tatting the corners of the inner edging.

I may even do up my version for the corners of some vintage edging patterns and show them here. One question though - if I do that, will it be alright if I write up the instructions and post it here? I mean, I don't want to be infringing any copyrights on those designs.

p/s - I have had to resort to putting my stamp on the photos after a photo of one of my snowflakes that I placed in my Flickr was used by someone without my permission. I am glad that it is not someone from my circle of friends because I know we are a group of ethical tatters and would never do such things.

  1. These are beautiful Jon! YOu continue to amaze me. I love your idea of giving people corners for edgings. I hope someone can answer your question about doing it for vintage edgings.

  2. Jon, I think your blog is an excellent place to put the writeup. You can say - in truth - that you made these edgings/corners based upon a design idea of your own, and any resemblance to someone else's published pattern is not intentional. The edgings are very simple, so it is entirely possible someone else could have also had the same idea independently. But the corners? The corners are great! I like the inner ones particularly. Good work! (as usual :))

  3. In my opinion, you can't really call it an edging is it doesn't have a corner.

If you check my blog, I just re-did a vintage pattern too, and I was wondering the very same thing? Can I put instructions up for it....(of course stating that it is a revision of an old pattern).
I don't feel qualified to answer this question, but I will eagerly follow your comments to see what the tatting world thinks.

  4. Tattycat, after a hiatus, it felt good to be designing again, even though it is just a basic one.

Mimi, for starters I may try and work on edging patterns that I can get on public domain.

Sherry, edgings should come with corners unless they are for circular pieces. But, depending on what the tatting will be attached to, you don't really need corners, like when putting at the two ends of a table runner. Still, having instructions for corners will be much more convenient. It then becomes the choice of the tatter whether to make only the straight side or with the corners.

  5. I stayed away from edgings because they don't have corners. I love the color combo of your edgings. I too have start putting watermarks on my photos - well the roundabout way. Need to get the software to make it better.

  6. I have a friend, Doretha Albee, in my lace guild she used to be VP of IOLI. She says if you've designed it even if it's revised or inspired by another design it's YOUR design. It's different than the other design and it's not a copy. Even if you come up with something straight out of your head with not looking at your books, you're bound to come up with something that resembles a previous pattern. How many crocheted doilies seem to look the same after a while???LOL (for example) anyway, I'm just quoting my friend and I'm not claiming to be an expert.

  7. Jon, your edgings are beautiful! I love the way you've designed the corners. I also have avoided some edgings because no directions for corners were given. I know I could figure them out, but if talented people you are willing to do the work for me, I'm not going to complain! ; )

  8. I can't answer your edging copyright question, but the corners you made look great. I should tell you that putting your name on your photos won't help. One of mine was recently taken from flickr and used without my permission with my name on it. What you need to do is turn off the ability to download images. If you need help, just ask.

  9. Diane, it's wonderful to be appreciated, :-)

Jeff, thank you for pointing out the function to disable the download on Flickr. I've made the change but I don't know how to check and see if it worked.

  10. I checked your pictures and it worked. This should slow down our image thief.

  11. First, I hate a thief. I hope someone can come up with a way to stop him/her/them dead in their tracks.

Second, I love those edgings. Those corners on the green/pink edgings look like little hearts! The colors are great, too. Very summer-y, reminds me of sliced watermelon.

  12. Thank you Jeff, for checking it out for me.

Steph, I didn't see the hearts in the edging until you mentioned it. I should make it again and using SLTs, I may be able to to make the individual hearts in alternating colour so that they show up better.

  13. I really like it and the colours are so refreshing too.

  14. Steph - you gave me an idea for my next HDT. At first I wanted to do a durian - one of our family favourite Malaysian fruit (I don't like it that much because it has a strong smell and it sticks to your fingers for a long while). But then I know it will be very similar to Sherry's limony. But then, I am in no mood to do any tatting. Just need to do one for a friend who is going back to UK.
